14:30 Tailgate Ramble – A Salute to Kid Ory

Edouard ‘Kid’ Ory, (1886 – 1973) was the most famous of the early jazz trombonists. Born in La Place, Louisiana, he became a revered bandleader in New Orleans in the second decade of the twentieth century. By the early ‘20s he had reached the West Coast, where he recorded the first jazz session by a Black New Orleans Jazz Band. ‘Ory’s Creole Trombone’influenced countless musicians.
By 1925 he was in Chicago, recording with Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton. The depression forced Ory out of the music business until 1944 when Orson Welles invited Ory to put a band together for his radio show. The Kid Ory Creole Jazz Band went on to become one of the premier jazzbands of the revival period. Famed trombonist, writer and BBC presenter, Mike Pointon will tell the Ory story in words and music accompanied by Allen Beechey, cornet, Trevor Whiting, clarinet, Martin Litton, piano, Keith Donald, bass & John Petters, drums.
